Tipped Set Screws

Conventional cup point set screws are frequently used to mount rotating components onto shafts. The cup point tip is designed to cut into the mating shaft. This impression raises a circular ridge on the shaft and creates a strong connection. While this is an advantage in permanent applications, it causes problems in situations where the shaft needs to be repositioned or removed. The raised circular ridge on the shaft caused by the cup point set screw resists repositioning of the mounted component and can damage both the shaft and the component.
Ondrives.US makes nylon or brass tip set screws with half-dog tips and oval tips in silver solder. These tipped set screws have graduated hardness and hold components in place without damage to the shaft or component.
When our Nylon Tip set screws are installed, the soft nylon tip compresses and conforms to the shape of the shaft and fills the space between the shaft and threaded hole. No damage occurs to the shaft. Nylon tip set screws are ideal for unhardened shafts. It is suggested that the screws be replaced after each repositioning of the component.
Nylon Tip set screws are available in stainless steel or alloy steel with thread sizes ranging from #0-80 to 1/2-20 or M2 to M10.
Brass Tip set screws are available in alloy steel or stainless steel with thread sizes ranging from #0-80 to 5/8-11 or M3 to M10.
Silver Solder Tip set screws are available in stainless steel with thread sizes ranging from #2-56 to 3/8-16 or M2 to M6.
