Precision Ground Gears

Precision ground gears are manufactured by using abrasive wheels to grind a gear blank to match the desired gear design. These versatile gears are better suited to use with fine instrumentation and other small-scale components, and in high precision applications.

Advantages of Ground Gears

  • More accurate finish: Precision ground gears feature a more precise tooth finish than machined or cut gears, which provides better, smoother meshing of gear teeth for more controlled operation.
  • More material options: While machining, stamping, and other manufacturing processes may limit material options, nearly any metal or alloy can be made into a gear via grinding. By selecting the material that’s actually best-suited to your application—rather than the “best available option”—you can improve performance.
  • Higher loads & better performance: Because of how they’re manufactured, ground gears are generally able to handle higher loads and higher stresses than gears produced via other means. Ground gears are especially useful in applications that require large amounts of torque.
Thanks to these unique advantages, in most applications, precision ground gears can outperform gears manufactured through other means. Ground gears deliver smoother performance and greater longevity.

Ondrives.US manufactures a full line of precision ground gears, including ground spur gears, splined spur gears, and spur gear racks, ground helical gears, ground worm gears and worms, and ground custom gears.

Ground Spur Gears

Consisting of a cylinder or disc with teeth that project outward along the outer edge, spur gears (straight-cut gears) are the most basic type of gear. Our ground spur gears are designed to pair with another spur gear to rotate two parallel shafts in opposite directions; if the shafts/gears must turn in the same direction, a third spur gear (an idler gear) can be installed between the two.

Ground Splined Spur Gears

Splined spur gears, or splined bore spur gears, feature splines around the full circumference of the I.D. to accommodate splined shafts. (Traditional spur gears have a single keyway in the I.D.) Our ground splined spur gears are otherwise the same as our standard spur gears.

Ground Spur Gear Racks

Spur gear racks are linear or gradually curved metal rods that feature a row of machined-in spur gear teeth running down the length. Also known as a rack gear, a gear rack is paired with matching gears to convert rotary motion into linear motion, or to convert linear motion into rotary motion. Our ground spur gear racks are cut and tolerance for continuous mounting, and can be butt joined to create longer lengths. Teeth are precision ground to DIN 867 tooth form standards.

Ground Helical Gears: 15° & 19°31’

Helical gears utilize an advanced version of spur gear design. Rather than being parallel to the axis of rotation, as in spur gears, helical gears’ teeth are set at an angle. This allows the teeth the engage more gradually, resulting in smoother and quieter operation. Ondrives.US manufactures ground 15° helical gears and ground 19°31’ helical gears for high precision applications. We offer left-hand helical gears and right-hand helical gears—a pair of opposite-handed helical gears will rotate parallel shafts in the opposite direction. A set of left hand and right hand 15° helical gears can be used in place of spur gears. The slight helix angle of the gears provide a much smoother motion while exerting only a minor axial force on the shafts and bearings. Our 19°31’ helical gears are designed to run with our gear racks with the same helix angle.

Ground Worm Gears & Worms

Worm gears (or wormwheel gears) and worms (or worm drives) are designed to work together to transfer motion between non-intersecting shaft at right angles. Worm gears and worms, which resemble spur gears and screws, respectively, combine to provide a high reduction ratio in a compact gear system. Our ground worm gears and ground worms are engineered for exceptionally smooth and quite operation.

Modified & Custom Ground Gears

To give you gears that meet all your design and performance requirements, Ondrives.US can produce modified versions of any of our precision ground gears, as well as completely custom ground gears that match your exact specifications. Modified and custom gears are the best way to ensure perfect fit, form, and function for your gear system. Contact us to discuss your custom gear needs.
