A gear is a rotating machine part that utilizes cut teeth, or cogs, to mesh with another toothed part—usually another gear or a linear toothed part (called a gear rack)—to transmit rotational motion and torque. By using a combination of precision gears with the correct ratio, the speed, torque, and even direction of a power source can be changed. Two or more gears working together, called a gear train or a transmission, will almost always create a change in torque. If one gear is larger than the other, a mechanical advantage is produced; the rotational speed and torque of the respective gears differs in proportion to their diameters.

Precision Spur Gears

Also called “straight-cut gears,” spur gears are the simplest type of gear. Comprised of a cylinder or disk with teeth that project radially, our inch spur gears are designed to mesh with other spur gears to turn parallel shafts in opposite directions; for applications where two shafts/gears must rotate in the same direction, a third spur gear, called an idler gear, can be installed between the two.

Precision Worm Gears & Worms

Worm gears or wormwheel gears, which resemble spur gears, and worms, which resemble screws, are used together to transfer motion between non-intersecting right angle shafts. The design of worm gears and worms enables them to provide a high reduction ratio in limited space. Our worms and worm gears make up the most compact gear system we offer, and provide smooth, ultra-quiet operation in most applications.

Precision Helical Gears

Helical gears, also called helical cut gears, are a more advanced version of spur gears. Instead of running parallel to the axis of rotation, the teeth of helical gears are set at an angle, which engage more gradually than spur gear teeth do for smoother and quieter operation. Ondrives.US’ inch helical gears feature 45°-angled teeth, and are available with left-hand or right-hand helixes. When helical gears of the opposite hand work together, they will act like spur gears to turn parallel shafts; same-hand helical gears will turn shafts that are 90° from each other. 

Precision Pinion Gears & Pinion Shafts

In general, a pinion is the smallest gear in a gear drive, and functions as a gear reducer. This device can take the form of a pinion gear or a pinion shaft, which is a pinion machined directly into the end of a shaft. Precision Gear Racks

A gear rack, or rack gear, is a linear or gradually curved metal rod with a row of spur gear teeth or helical gear teeth machined in down the length. Gear racks are used in conjunction with gears to convert rotary motion into linear motion, or to convert linear motion into rotary motion. Our inch spur gear racks are designed to mate with our spur gears and are available with rectangular or round rod as the base.
