Helical cut gears are similar to spur gears with their teeth cut at an angle. The most popular helical gear design is 45 degrees. Helical cut gears can have a right hand or a left-hand gear helix. When 45° helical gears of the opposite hand operate together they will turn parallel shafts in opposite rotation. In parallel shaft applications, the advantage of the helical gear design over spur gears is improved smoothness, with less noise since the angled teeth engage more gradually and more than one tooth is in mesh at any time. The disadvantage of helical gear applications in parallel drives is the resultant thrust along the axis of the gear. This can be mitigated by the use of thrust bearings. The disadvantage of helical gears in right-angle drives is increased sliding friction between the mating teeth. This can be mitigated by the use of proper lubricant.
